Projected completion: 2011

Building Certifications: LEED Gold (Projected)

Project Partners: NYC Department of Design and Construction, Rice + Lipka Architects

Brief Summary: Having served generations of users since its opening in 1914, the Library is now being renovated. A new and contemporary identity for the branch with particular emphasis towards providing a fully accessible and LEED certified interior environment, will provide a nurturing environment for people of all ages. Working within the constraints of the existing structure, the design team implemented an active design strategy for the library that promotes and improves opportunities for physical activity through improved building design. The project is on track to receive a LEED Gold rating including the Design for Active Occupants Pilot Credit.

Active Design Highlights:

  1. A partially open, cantilevered glass stair will transform the lobby space and encourages its use for vertical circulation.
  2. The main stair includes customized graphic art to create a more desirable and vibrant space. Stair prompt signage will be posted on each floor of the building.
  3. The building is sited nearby a children’s playground to promote active play.
