New York, NY – May 19th, 2014 - The Center for Active Design held an awards reception, Celebrate Active Design, recognizing projects that have shown innovation in using design to promote health. The sold-out event brought together an inter-disciplinary group of influential architects, planners, real estate developers, government agencies, policy makers, community groups, and public health professionals with a shared vision of re-designing the built environment to promote health.

The Center for Active Design: Excellence awards is the first competition of its kind that recognized the role that design plays in addressing the greatest health epidemics of our time: chronic diseases. Each of the projects recognized at Celebrate Active Design, encourage physical activity within buildings and public spaces by using the Center’s four unique approaches to transforming the built environment: Active Transportation, Active Buildings, Active Recreation, and Food Access.

Project winners drew from a group of international architectural and other design firms. The projects recognized reflect the growing national and international interest Active Design.

The Leadership in Active Design: Excellence award was given to Les Bluestone, President of Blue Sea Development Company and Blue Sea Construction Co. Mr. Bluestone was recognized for pioneering the implementation of Active Design strategies in affordable housing.
